Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolites as Biomarkers in Equids: Assay Choice Matters

چکیده
Free ranging animals are exposed to environmental, demographic, and ecological challenges over time, which can affect their health fitness. Non-invasive biomarkers provide insight into how cope with these assess the effectiveness of conservation management strategies. We evaluated free ponies (Equus ferus caballus) on Carneddau Mountain range, North Wales respond 2 stimuli: an acute stressor annual roundup event in November 2014, spatial temporal variation factors 2018. fecal glucocorticoid metabolites using enzyme immunoassays (EIAs): 11-oxoetiocholanolone EIA (measuring 11,17-dioxoandrostanes [11,17-DOAs]) a corticosterone EIA. The former assay has been validated equids, whereas there is limited evidence for suitability latter. used additional parent testosterone measure androgen response challenges. Following roundup, metabolite concentrations measured by EIAs were not correlated. 11,17-DOAs elevated from second day following then slowly returned pre-round levels next weeks. In contrast, showed no roundup. Measuring fecal glucocorticoid metabolites in mammals and birds: the importance of validation.
In recent years, the noninvasive monitoring of steroid hormone metabolites in feces of mammals and droppings of birds has become an increasingly popular technique. It offers several advantages and has been applied to a variety of species under various settings. However, using this technique to reliably assess an animal's adrenocortical activity is not that simple and straightforward to apply. B...
متن کاملFecal glucocorticoid metabolites in wild yellow-bellied marmots: experimental validation, individual differences and ecological correlates.
Natural selection is expected to shape phenotypic traits that permit organisms to respond appropriately to the environments in which they live. One important mechanism by which animals cope with changes in their environment is through physiological responses to stressors mediated by glucocorticoid hormones. Here we perform biological and physiological validations of a minimally-invasive techniq...
متن کاملFeasibility of Fecal MicroRNAs as Novel Biomarkers for Pancreatic Cancer
INTRODUCTION Pancreatic cancer (PCA) is an aggressive tumor that associates with high mortality rates. Majority of PCA patients are diagnosed usually at late tumor stages when the therapeutic options are limited. MicroRNAs (miRNA) are involved in tumor development and are commonly dysregulated in PCA. As a proof-of-principle study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of fecal miRNAs as biomarker...
متن کاملFecal MicroRNAs as novel biomarkers for colon cancer screening.
INTRODUCTION Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, but currently available noninvasive screening programs have achieved only a modest decrease in mortality. MicroRNAs (miRNA) play an important role in a wide array of biological processes and are commonly dysregulated in neoplasia. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of fecal miRNAs as biomarkers for colo...
متن کاملSerum Metabolites as Potential Biomarkers for Diagnosis of Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent chronic degenerative joint disease that mainly affects the elderly population. The aim of this study was to investigate serum signature metabolites as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of knee OA. Global serum metabolic profiles of 40 patients with knee OA and 20 healthy controls (HC) were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography ...
